Navigating Tough Talks: How I Conduct Performance Conversations in Figjam
Being a boss is not always a walk in the park—especially when it comes to difficult conversations. My latest addition to the Manager 1:1 Starter Pack.
👇 I'm excited to introduce my special edition template, "Difficult Discussions," presented at the BeMore2023 Conference. Here's a quick rundown of its core components:
Start Off Strong
Using simple frameworks like COIN or SBI can help set the mood for a positive conversation. These frameworks guide you on how to begin a conversation, offer feedback, and discuss observations. You don't need to be a communication expert—just follow the steps!
Two-Way Streets
Think of communication as a dialogue, not a monologue. By inviting the other person to share their thoughts, you open up a space for more productive talks. A technique like Hypothesis-based coaching can help make this process easier. Pose a theory about what you think could improve, then allow for a back-and-forth discussion.
Focus on the Future
While discussing issues, also point out areas for growth. Help your team understand what they can do better and how. This provides a constructive, forward-looking angle to the conversation.
Engage, Listen, Lead
The key to a successful discussion is not just to talk but to engage. Listen actively and pave the path for a more transparent work culture. Navigating difficult discussions doesn't have to be daunting. Use these strategies to improve your communication skills, and watch your work environment transform.
